What Is Semi-Custom Support?
Semi-custom support is a customization method that adjusts only certain specifications based on an existing AC/DC Power Adapter design.
Unlike full custom design, which develops circuits and enclosures from scratch, semi-custom support leverages a proven design to reduce development risks, costs, and lead times while optimizing for the actual usage environment.
In industrial equipment applications, there are many cases where "the basic specifications are sufficient, but issues arise due to on-site conditions," making semi-custom support an effective solution.
Background of the Consultation | Common Initial Requests
In this case, we received the following inquiries from an industrial equipment manufacturer:
- They were using an existing AC/DC Power Adapter, but noise was affecting equipment operation
- They wanted to avoid design changes on the equipment side as much as possible
- Mass production was approaching, so a short lead time was required
- They preferred to avoid re-certification or major specification changes
At this stage, rather than immediately determining whether full customization was necessary, it was important to first assess whether the issue could be resolved within the existing design.
Why We Determined Semi-Custom Was Suitable
Based on interviews and evaluations, we confirmed the following:
- There were no issues with basic specifications such as output voltage and current
- The main cause of noise stemmed from the usage environment and wiring conditions
- Compatibility with the equipment-side interface was ensured
Based on these findings, we concluded that a semi-custom approach leveraging the existing design was optimal, rather than pursuing a full custom redesign of circuits and enclosures.
Details of the Semi-Custom Implementation
In this case, we made the following specification adjustments:
- Review of circuit component selection (MOSFETs, Y capacitors, line filters, etc.)
- Addition of ferrite cores to the DC cable (with optimized positioning)
- Improved noise resistance through revision of cable materials
All of these adjustments were completed within the scope of the existing design, enabling implementation without design changes or re-certification.
Advantages of Choosing Semi-Custom
By selecting a semi-custom solution, the following benefits were achieved:
- Shortened development time
- Minimized initial costs
- Avoided impact on the mass production schedule
- Improved reliability while maintaining a proven design
If Full Customization Had Been Selected
If full customization had been chosen, the following would have been expected:
- Longer development period
- Higher initial development costs
- Increased evaluation and re-certification workload
In this case, these measures were deemed unnecessary, and a semi-custom approach was adopted to avoid over-engineering.
When Semi-Custom Is the Right Choice
Semi-custom support is effective in the following situations:
- The basic specifications are satisfied by an existing product
- Partial adjustments such as noise or wiring conditions are required
- Cost and lead time are priorities
- Re-certification should be avoided
