What is EU ErP Lot7?
We provide a clear explanation of AC adapter and the European ErP Directive and ErP Lot7 in switching power supplies.
What is EU ErP Lot 7?
European environmental regulations - ErP Directive (Eco-design Directive)
ErP (Energy related products) refers to products that either use energy directly or influence energy consumption indirectly, such as devices using water or insulation products for buildings and windows.
Compared with ErP, EuP (Energy using products) specifically refers to products that depend on energy inputs such as electricity. All ErP and EuP must comply with energy efficiency requirements, which are defined by the ErP Directive.
Background
Originally, Europe had the EuP Directive, which was replaced in November 2009 by the new Energy related Products Directive (ErP Directive), 2009/125/EC.
The earlier directive for energy-using products only applied to products that actually consumed energy, such as computers and washing machines.
The new ErP Directive (Eco-design Directive) now covers not only the products included in the old directive but also those that are energy-related but do not directly consume energy, such as water-saving taps and shower heads.
Under this directive, EU regulatory authorities developed a foundation for specific implementing measures affecting a wide range of directives. The goal is to reduce energy use throughout the supply chain, from the design stage through to production, transportation, and packaging.
Products that comply with this directive can be easily identified by the CE mark. In this case, the CE mark confirms that the product meets safety and energy efficiency requirements.
Target products are categorized by Lot numbers. External power supplies such as AC adapters fall under Lot 7.
Lot 7 (External Power Supplies) Requirements
*This is a partial excerpt from a notification by the European Union.
Regarding no-load power consumption and average active efficiency:
No-load power consumption must not exceed 0.50W. The average active efficiency must not fall below the following values:
When PO < 1.0 W: 0.500 · PO
When 1.0 W ≦ PO ≦ 51.0 W: 0.090 · ln(PO) + 0.500
When PO > 51.0 W: 0.850
No-load power consumption must not exceed the following upper limits:
AC-DC external power supply (excluding low voltage external power supplies) | Low voltage external power supply | |
|---|---|---|
| PO ≦ 51.0 W | 0.30 W | 0.30 W |
| PO > 51.0 W | 0.50 W | Not applicable |
The average active efficiency must not fall below the following minimum values:
| AC-AC and AC-DC external power supplies (excluding low voltage external power supplies) | Low voltage external power supply | |
|---|---|---|
| PO ≦ 1.0 W | 0.480 · PO + 0.140 | 0.497 · PO + 0.067 |
| 1.0 W < PO ≦ 51.0 W | 0.063 · ln(PO) + 0.622 | 0.075 · ln(PO) + 0.561 |
| PO > 51.0 W | 0.870 | 0.860 |
In addition, decimal point notation is required on power supply labels.
