What is EU ErP Lot7?

AC/DC power adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount, provides a clear explanation of the European ErP Directive and ErP Lot7 in switching power supplies.

What is the EU ErP Lot 7?

European Environmental Regulation: The ErP Directive (Eco-Design Directive)

ErP (Energy related products) refers to products that either use energy directly or have an indirect impact on energy consumption, such as water-using devices, building insulation products, and windows.

Compared to ErP, EuP (Energy using products) refers to products that rely on energy input (such as electricity). All ErP and EuP products must comply with energy efficiency requirements. This is mandated by the ErP Directive.

History

Originally, Europe had the EuP Directive, but in November 2009, it was replaced by the new Energy-related Products Directive (ErP Directive) 2009/125/EC.

The older directive targeting energy-using products applied only to products like computers and washing machines that consume energy.

The new ErP Directive (Eco-Design Directive) expands the scope to include not only those products but also items that are related to energy but do not directly use it, such as water-saving faucets and showerheads.

This directive enables the EU regulatory authorities to establish a foundation for concrete implementing measures affecting a wide range of directives. These measures aim to reduce energy consumption across the supply chain, starting from the design stage to production, transportation, and packaging.

Products that comply with this directive can be easily identified by the CE mark. In this case, the CE mark covers both product safety and energy efficiency requirements.

Products are categorized by Lot numbers, and external power supplies such as AC/DC power adapters—desktop & wall-mount types—belong to Lot 7.

Lot 7 (External Power Supplies) Requirements

* A portion of the announcement from the European Union is introduced below.

Regarding no-load power consumption and average active efficiency

No-load power consumption must not exceed 0.50 W. Average active efficiency must not be lower than the following values:
When PO < 1.0 W: 0.500 · PO
When 1.0 W ≦ PO ≦ 51.0 W: 0.090 · ln(PO) + 0.500

When PO > 51.0 W: 0.850

No-load power consumption must not exceed the following upper limits.

AC-DC External Power Supplies (excluding low-voltage external power supplies)

Low-Voltage External Power Supplies

PO ≦ 51.0 W0.30 W0.30 W
PO > 51.0 W0.50 WNone

Average active efficiency must not fall below the following minimum values.

AC-AC and AC-DC External Power Supplies (excluding low-voltage external power supplies)Low-Voltage External Power Supplies
PO ≦ 1.0 W0.480 · PO + 0.140 0.497 · PO + 0.067
1.0 W < PO ≦ 51.0 W0.063 · ln(PO) + 0.6220.075 · ln(PO) + 0.561
PO > 51.0 W0.8700.860

In addition, decimal points are required on power supply labels.
