How to choose a switching power supply

This page provides a concise summary of how to choose a basic switching power supply. We hope it will be helpful as fundamental knowledge during the initial stage of selection.

How to Choose a Switching Power Supply?

The general method of selecting a switching power supply can be summarized into six major points, which are introduced below.

Select Switching Power Supply Functions According to Your Needs.

Select protection features such as overvoltage protection, overheat protection, and overload protection. There are also application functions such as signal features (indicating normal and fault conditions), remote control, remote sensing, and features like parallel connection and multiple outputs.

Select the Appropriate Output Voltage.

In addition to selecting an appropriate output voltage, the first thing to consider when selecting a switching power supply is to understand the power demands of the device being powered. Accurate understanding of the load’s required power consumption, voltage, and current is essential for the operation and safety of your equipment. Areas to understand include whether your device operates at a constant power level and what the minimum and peak power demands are.

Select the Appropriate Power Rating.

To use the switching power supply for a longer time, it is recommended to choose one rated at least 30% higher than your requirement.

Consider Load Characteristics.

For motors, LEDs, and capacitive loads, choose an appropriate switching power supply to prevent overload from inrush current during start-up. In the case of motors, it is also necessary to consider reverse voltage at the time of shutdown.

Consider the Operating Temperature of the Switching Power Supply and Whether Auxiliary Cooling is Needed.

The output of a switching power supply decreases in high-temperature environments. If forced air cooling is needed, fan selection is required.

Ensure Compliance with Applicable Safety and EMC Certifications.

The required certifications vary depending on the project.
