Examples of abnormalities in the main unit include input errors and output errors. Examples of abnormalities in the operating environment include temperature anomalies. The purpose of the signal may be to inform a person of an abnormality that has already occurred so that actions such as stopping the equipment can be taken, or to notify a person of signs of an impending abnormality so that corrective action can prevent a failure.
