A device designed to protect components and equipment from high voltage such as lightning strikes. It normally has high insulation resistance under normal voltages, but its resistance decreases when a certain high voltage is applied. Utilizing this characteristic, it is installed between the protected components/equipment and the ground to discharge high voltage to the ground during events like lightning strikes, thereby preventing damage.
