Bypass diode

A diode connected in parallel with a power supply or load that normally does not conduct current, but protects components by diverting current when a high voltage is applied. Examples include a protection diode connected in parallel with solar power generation cells to divert current when resistance increases due to shading, and a flywheel diode connected in parallel with a motor to divert and protect against high voltage current generated when the power is turned off.
