Bypass diode

A diode connected in parallel with power supplies or loads, which normally does not conduct current, but diverts current when a high voltage is applied to protect components. Examples of use include protective diodes connected in parallel with solar cells to bypass current when shaded areas cause resistance increase, and flywheel diodes connected in parallel with motors to divert current and protect against high voltage when the power is turned off.
