A component designed to protect electrical and electronic devices from high voltages caused by external surges such as lightning surges and switching surges. It has a structure in which semiconductor ceramics are sandwiched between two electrodes, and it features a property where resistance decreases as voltage increases. Under normal operating voltages, it has high resistance and does not conduct current, but as the voltage increases, the resistance decreases, allowing high surge voltages to bypass the circuit and protect the device.
