A ferromagnetic component inserted at the center of a winding to enhance the magnetizing effect of a coil or transformer. In a transformer, it has a rectangular ring structure and is also called an iron core, as it serves to transmit energy from the primary side to the secondary side. In switching power supplies, soft magnetic materials with low hysteresis loss are used. Materials include those mainly composed of metal and those mainly composed of metal oxides.
