Surge

A high-voltage waveform that momentarily exceeds the specified value in an electric circuit. There are switching surges caused by circuit opening and closing, and external surges caused by lightning strikes and other factors. They adversely affect electrical and electronic equipment and can cause failures, so countermeasures are implemented in many devices. As countermeasures, there is a method of diverting surge voltage to the ground by installing arresters and varistors.
