Surge
A high-voltage waveform that momentarily exceeds the specified value on an electrical circuit. There are switching surges caused by the opening and closing of circuits, such as switching surges, and external surges caused by lightning strikes, such as external surges. Since they adversely affect electrical and electronic equipment and can cause failures, countermeasures are implemented in many devices. One method of protection is to discharge the surge voltage to the ground by installing devices such as arresters and varistors.
