A transient high-voltage waveform that exceeds a specified value on an electrical circuit. Causes include switching surges from circuit switching and external surges from events such as lightning strikes. These can negatively affect electrical and electronic devices and cause malfunctions, so many devices have countermeasures in place. One method of countermeasure is to divert surge voltage to the ground by installing arresters or varistors.
