Surge

A high-voltage waveform that momentarily exceeds a specified value on an electric circuit. Causes include switching surges due to circuit switching and external surges caused by lightning. These can negatively affect electrical and electronic equipment and lead to malfunctions, so many devices implement countermeasures. One method is to divert the surge voltage to the ground by installing devices such as arresters and varistors.
