About AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount Used in Electronic Musical Instruments

Safety Standards for Electronic Musical Instruments

AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount for electronic musical instruments, audio equipment, and video devices must comply with international safety standards such as IEC/EN 60065. This standard applies to both linear and switching types and serves as a crucial benchmark to ensure product safety and reliability.

Oil Test Method and Evaluation Criteria

The Vicat softening temperature test measures the temperature at which a flat needle penetrates the sample by 1mm, used to compare the thermal softening characteristics of materials. This test is required only in audio-related safety standards (UL).

Test Method (Reference):
Target part is immersed in an oil bath, starting at 100°C. Then, the temperature is increased by 50°C every hour, reaching a final temperature of 175°C for evaluation.

Recovery Case from Safety Standard Failure

Contributing to Mass Production with Flexible Support and Technical Proposals

In a development project for AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount for a radio product requested by major manufacturer S company, the product initially failed a safety standard test. The main reason was that the polycarbonate (PC) resin used for the case could not pass the oil test required by UL standards.

In response to this issue, Unifive collaborated closely with S company to analyze the cause in detail. As a result, without altering the overall design, we proposed a minimal yet effective improvement by switching only the resin around the AC pin area to an alternative material. This solution passed the retest and enabled a smooth transition to mass production.

Through this case, we deepened our understanding of the thermal impact and deformation risks arising from the use of identical resins and established methods to ensure reliability by combining different resins appropriately. This know-how is now effectively applied to similar cases.

At Unifive, we offer custom development for AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount/power supplies, as well as solutions based on experience for safety standard and design issues. Feel free to contact us even in the early consultation phase. With our solid experience and responsiveness, we strongly support problem-solving for your company.

What Are Electronic Musical Instruments?

- Evolving Electronic Technology Supporting Diverse Sound Creation -

Electronic musical instruments are a general term for instruments that generate audio output by creating low-frequency waveform signals through electronic circuits. They are widely used for home entertainment, educational settings such as schools, and by professional musicians for performances and recordings.

Electronic circuits allow control of the three elements of sound: pitch, volume, and timbre. Timbre generation methods include the following technologies:

  • Subtractive Synthesis: Creates timbre by filtering periodic pulses

  • Additive Synthesis: Combines multiple sine waves to construct harmonics

  • Modulation Synthesis (e.g., FM): Uses modulated waveforms to generate complex sounds

  • PCM: Sampling method that digitally plays back recorded waveforms

While hardware synthesizers used to be the mainstream, software synthesizers operating on PCs or mobile devices have become more common in recent years.

Evolution of Electronic Musical Instruments and Unifive’s Contributions

As electronic musical instruments evolve, stable power supply becomes increasingly important. These instruments, requiring delicate and precise operation such as sound source circuits, DSPs, and wireless modules, demand low-noise and highly reliable power supplies.
