Development case of AC adapter for European market fans

The production site used EMS in China, and the products were shipped to Europe bundled with fans. The first point we confirmed was how to meet the customer's unique power demands and the technical standards of the required safety certifications.

Upon review, the main challenge was acquiring the appropriate safety certification. For this particular application, obtaining EN60335 was essential. However, EN60335 cannot be acquired solely with the AC adapter, as interpretations by certification bodies may vary. The most reliable method is for the customer to request evaluation of the AC adapter together with the device as a set.

Additionally, for the set evaluation of EN60335, it was required to submit the CB proof that the standalone AC adapter complies with EN61558. This is because transformers used together with the device must meet IEC/EN61558 structural requirements. Since our AC adapters include transformers, we obtained IEC/EN61558 certification and issued a CE declaration to ensure product guarantees.

The customer successfully completed the development with the set evaluation of EN60335 and we delivered the desired AC adapter.

In this case, the AC adapter was designed with the intent of acquiring 61558 certification while also meeting IEC60335 structural requirements, making it possible to complete both design and certification appropriately.

If the initial verification had been even slightly mistaken, securing certification could have been delayed. However, by closely exchanging information with the customer from the start, the project was completed smoothly.
