Development Case of AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount for Fans Destined for Europe

Production was outsourced to an EMS in China, and the products were to be shipped to Europe along with the fans. The first step was to determine how to meet the customer's individual power requirements and comply with safety standard technical specifications.

The main challenge identified during this process was acquiring certifications for safety standards. For this use case, obtaining EN60335 certification was essential. However, the IEC/EN60335 standard, depending on the certification body, cannot be obtained solely for the AC/DC Power Adapter — Desktop & Wall-Mount. The most reliable method is for customers to have the adapter and the appliance certified together as a set by a certification body.

For the EN60335 set evaluation, it was also necessary to submit CB documentation proving that the adapter alone also complies with EN61558. This is because transformers used with equipment are subject to the structural requirements of IEC/EN61558. Since our AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount include transformers, we obtained IEC/EN61558 certification and made a CE declaration to ensure product reliability.

The customer successfully completed development and obtained the desired AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount with EN60335 set evaluation.

In this case, the adapter was designed based on the premise that it could acquire EN61558 and meet the structural requirements of IEC60335, and the relevant certifications were obtained accordingly.

If even a small mistake had been made during the initial assessment, the certification process might have been delayed. However, since we were able to exchange thorough and accurate information with the customer from the beginning, development proceeded smoothly.
