Development case study of an AC/DC Power Adapter used for fans for the European market

The production site used a Chinese EMS, and the fans were shipped together with the AC/DC Power Adapter to Europe. The first thing we confirmed was each of the customer's power requirements and the policy for obtaining compliance with the technical standards of the applicable safety regulations.

As a result of our review, the main challenge was obtaining safety certification. For this equipment, compliance with EN60335 was mandatory. However, although there may be slight differences in interpretation depending on the certification body, IEC/EN60335 cannot be obtained for the AC/DC Power Adapter alone. The most reliable approach is for the customer to request evaluation of the AC/DC Power Adapter together with the equipment as a set by a certification body.

In addition, for the EN60335 set evaluation, it was required to submit a CB report demonstrating that the AC/DC Power Adapter alone complies with EN61558. This was because the transformer used with the equipment is subject to the structural requirements of IEC/EN61558. Since our AC/DC Power Adapter uses a transformer, from the standpoint of Products assurance, we obtained IEC/EN61558 certification for the AC/DC Power Adapter and issued a CE declaration.

The customer also underwent the EN60335 set evaluation, successfully completed the development, and we delivered the desired AC/DC Power Adapter.

In this case, we designed the AC/DC Power Adapter with the expectation that it would obtain 61558 certification and also satisfy the structural requirements of IEC60335, and proceeded with the necessary certifications.

If the initial confirmation had been mistaken even slightly, certification could have been delayed. However, because we were able to closely exchange information with the customer from the beginning, we believe the development was successfully completed.
