Explanation of technical standards for safety regulations
This is an explanation of the technical standards for safety regulations in AC adapters and switching power supplies. It also includes information about the relationship between the intended use of the product you are inquiring about and the technical standards of the safety regulations, so please take a look.
Explanation of Technical Standards for Safety Regulations
Proposing Optimal Solutions Based on Confirmation of Product Application
When we receive inquiries regarding adapters, we are often asked the following types of questions:
"Do you have adapters rated at ◯V◯A that are certified for UL, CE, or PSE?"
When we receive such questions, we always ask our customers to confirm the "product application." In this article, we would like to introduce the reason behind this.
AC adapters are subject to legal safety standards in countries around the world. These safety regulations include technical standards that depend on the "product application," and the required technical standards for adapters vary depending on the devices with which they are sold as a set.
In other words, even though you may refer to "UL" or "CE" in general terms, the technical standards you need to obtain actually vary depending on the "product application."
The Destination Country of the Product Changes the Options
For example, if you are planning to sell telecommunications or AV equipment bundled with an adapter in the United States, Europe, and Japan, the technical standards that the adapter should meet are considered to be the following:
| Application | IEC International Standard | United States | Europe | Japan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Telecommunications Equipment | IEC60950 | UL60950 | EN60950 | PSE Appendix 12 J60950 or PSE Appendix 8 |
| AV Equipment | IEC60065 | UL60065 | EN60065 | PSE Appendix 12 J60065 or PSE Appendix 8 |
If the product is shipped with safety certification under a different technical standard, it may lead to a situation where safety regulations in the respective country or region are violated.
* As of December 2020, EN60950-1 and EN60065 have been abolished
There Are Other Points to Consider Besides Safety Regulations
In addition to safety regulations, some countries, such as the United States with DOE, have separate energy efficiency regulations. There are also EMC regulations such as those represented by CISPR in Europe. The required standards and regulations for adapters differ depending on the country and region, and within that, the measurement standards also vary by device.
To provide the best solution for our customers, we always confirm the intended use of the adapter for the reasons mentioned above.
In addition to the examples mentioned above, such as telecommunications and AV equipment, we also have a product lineup that supports medical equipment.
Of course, we also have extensive experience supporting home appliances, industrial equipment, HEMS, and IoT devices. Custom solutions are also available.
