Explanation of the technical standards for safety regulations

This is an explanation of the technical standards for safety regulations in AC adapters and switching power supplies. We have also described the relationship between the application of the Products you inquired about and the technical standards for safety regulations, so please take a look.

Explanation of Technical Standards for Safety Regulations

Proposing the Optimal Solution by Confirming the Products Application

First, when we receive inquiries regarding adapters, we are often asked questions such as the following.

“Do you have an adapter rated at ◯V◯A that has obtained UL, CE, or PSE certification?”

Whenever we receive such questions, we always confirm the “Products application” with the customer. Here, we would like to briefly explain the reason for this.

AC adapters are subject to legal safety standards in countries around the world. These safety standards include technical requirements that vary depending on the “Products application.” The technical requirements applicable to an adapter differ depending on the equipment with which it is sold as part of a set.

In short, even when referring to “UL” or “CE,” the technical standards for safety certification that must be obtained actually vary depending on the “Products application.”

The Destination Country of the Products Changes the Available Options

For example, if you plan to sell communication equipment or AV equipment bundled with an adapter in the United States, Europe, and Japan, the technical standards that the adapter must comply with are considered to be as follows.

ApplicationIEC International StandardUnited StatesEuropeJapan
Communication EquipmentIEC60950UL60950EN60950PSE Appendix Table 12 J60950 or PSE Appendix Table 8
AV EquipmentIEC60065UL60065EN60065PSE Appendix Table 12 J60065 or PSE Appendix Table 8

If a Products is shipped after obtaining safety certification under different technical standards, it could potentially result in a violation of the safety regulations of the respective country or region.

*Currently, EN60950-1 and EN60065 have been discontinued (as of December 2020).

There Are Other Points to Consider Besides Safety Standards

In addition, some countries have established separate energy efficiency regulations in addition to safety standards, such as the DOE in the United States. There are also EMC regulations such as those represented by CISPR in Europe. The standards and regulations required for adapters differ depending on the country and region, and even within those, the measurement criteria vary depending on the equipment.

For these reasons, in order to provide the best possible proposal for our customers, we always confirm the intended application of the adapter.

In addition to the communication and AV equipment mentioned above, we also offer a Products lineup that supports medical equipment.

Of course, we also have extensive experience supporting a wide range of applications, including home appliances, industrial equipment, HEMS, and IoT devices. Custom solutions are also available.
