What is IEC62368-1?
We explain the newly integrated hazard standard, IEC62368-1. The対応 method for the AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount is also described.
About the Upgrade to IEC62368-1
IEC62368-1 is a new standard that aims to improve convenience by unifying the international safety standards for AV equipment products under IEC60065, and information technology equipment products under IEC60950-1.
IEC62368-1 reflects an approach called Hazard-Based Standard Development (HBSD).
| Conventional Standards | AV Equipment: IEC 60065 CSA/UL 60065 EN60065 | Information Equipment: IEC60950-1 CSA/UL 60950-1 EN 60950-1 |

Why Integrate into IEC62368-1?
With advances in technology, the functions of products around us are evolving and diversifying daily. As more functions are added, it is becoming common for one product to incorporate multiple features.
For example, if a new television not only includes traditional AV functions but also connects to a network like a smart home and includes IT and information technology functions, it becomes difficult to determine whether it should fall under IEC60950 or IEC60065 when filing for certification.
To address such cases that arise from technological progress, integration into IEC62368-1 is becoming necessary.
IEC62368-1 Compliance for AC Adapters
- For mass-produced general-purpose models, compliance with IEC62368 involves checking the technical differences and verifying components that meet IEC62368 requirements. Basically, preliminary checks on the sample structure are carried out at certification body laboratories. After our design department reviews any issues, if no major changes are required, revisions will be made. Examples include switching to discharge resistors suitable for IEC62368, maintaining insulation distance between the heatsink and transformer core, using case materials that meet V-0 flammability, and increasing adhesive volumes.
- For new developments, we proceed with the design layout based on IEC62368 standards.
- For safety certification applications, as of today, IEC62368 applications can only be certified by CB and UL. Other countries have not yet announced the final implementation standards (as of 2016).
At UNIFIVE, we continue to monitor related information. For example, currently, testing and certification bodies eligible to handle CB applications are TUV and UL laboratories. Only UL laboratories can handle UL applications. TUV laboratory applications are expected to begin soon.
Additionally, post-certification maintenance such as managing validity periods and standard upgrades is also necessary. At UNIFIVE, we support power supply safety certifications and work to ensure that our AC adapters and our customers' terminal devices can smoothly enter various international markets.
The AC adapters developed by our company based on custom specifications are always products tailored to customers' requests, and the compatibility with terminal devices is handled through our unique solutions.
