What is IEC62368-1?
Explains the newly integrated hazard standard, IEC62368-1. Also describes compliance methods for AC/DC power adapters — desktop & wall-mount.
About the Upgrade to IEC62368-1
IEC62368-1 is a new international safety standard that unifies IEC60065, which pertains to AV equipment, and IEC60950-1, which pertains to ICT equipment, aiming for greater convenience.
IEC62368-1 is based on a Hazard-Based Standard Development (HBSD) approach.

Why Integrate into IEC62368-1?
With technological advancement, the functions of products around us continue to evolve and diversify daily. As functions increase, one product may incorporate various features.
For instance, a new television may not only have traditional AV and ICT functions, but also connect to a network like a smart home device including IT capabilities. In such a case, it becomes unclear whether to apply IEC60950 or IEC60065 for certification.
To respond to such cases brought by technological advancements, integration into IEC62368-1 is necessary.
IEC62368-1 Compliance for AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount
- For existing mass-produced general-purpose products, IEC62368 requirements involve confirming technical differences and compatible components. Basically, the certification lab conducts a preliminary review of the sample structure. After our design department receives feedback, if no major changes are needed, we proceed with revisions. Examples include changing discharge resistors to IEC62368-compliant versions, ensuring insulation distance between heat sinks and transformer cores, meeting V-0 case material requirements, and increasing bonding material amounts.
- For new developments, we proceed with layout and development based on IEC62368 standards.
- When applying for safety certification, currently only CB and UL certifications are available under IEC62368. Other national applications do not yet have finalized implementation standards (as of 2016).
Unifive continuously monitors updates. For example, currently authorized CB test certification laboratories include TUV and UL testing labs. UL certification can only be handled by UL test labs. TUV applications are still pending.
In addition, it is necessary to manage the validity period after obtaining safety certifications and perform periodic upgrades. At Unifive, we assist with acquiring safety certifications for AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount, helping customers’ terminal devices smoothly expand into global markets.
AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount developed with custom specifications at our company are always tailor-made to meet customer needs. Determination of compatibility with terminal devices is part of our unique solution.
