About the Upgrade to IEC62368-1
IEC62368-1 is a new standard that unifies the international safety standard IEC60065 for AV equipment products and the international safety standard IEC60950-1 for information technology equipment products, aiming for greater convenience.
IEC62368-1 is based on an approach called Hazard-Based Standard Development (HBSD).

Why integrate into IEC62368-1?
With technological advancements, the functions of products around us continue to evolve and diversify every day. As functions increase, there are cases where multiple functions are integrated into a single product.
For example, if a new model television not only has conventional AV equipment functions but also connects to a network like a smart home device and includes IT and information equipment functions, it may become difficult to determine whether to classify it under IEC60950 or IEC60065 when applying for certification.
To address such cases arising from technological progress, integration into IEC62368-1 has become necessary.
Compliance with IEC62368-1 for AC/DC Power Adapter
- For existing mass-produced general-purpose products, IEC62368 requirements are addressed by confirming technical differences and verifying components compliant with IEC62368. Basically, a preliminary review of the sample structure is conducted at a certification body laboratory. After our design department receives any findings, corrections are made provided there are no major changes. Examples include changing to discharge resistors compliant with IEC62368, ensuring insulation distance between the heat sink and transformer core, using V-0 rated case materials, and increasing bonding material.
- For new developments, layouts are designed according to IEC62368 standards and development proceeds accordingly.
- When applying for safety certification, currently IEC62368 applications can be made for CB and UL certifications. Application standards in other countries have not yet been finalized (as of 2016).
UNIFIVE continuously monitors updates. For example, certification bodies currently able to process CB applications are TUV and UL laboratories. UL applications can only be handled by UL laboratories. Applications through TUV laboratories are expected to begin in the future.
In addition, after obtaining safety certification, it is necessary to manage expiration dates and perform upgrades and other maintenance.
