About Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Act (PSE)
This page provides a clear explanation of the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law (PSE) for AC/DC power adapters — desktop & wall-mount, and switching power supplies. With years of experience and proven track record, Unifive possesses extensive knowledge of PSE and can offer product solutions that ensure customer confidence.
About PSE Regulations
The Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law (PSE) was enacted in April 2001 to replace the former Electrical Appliance Control Law and is defined as follows.
Electrical products used in general households, stores, and offices that are designated by government ordinance (electrical appliances) cannot be sold without a PSE mark indicating conformance to national technical standards, the name of the business operator, rated voltage, rated power consumption, etc. If hazardous products without these markings are distributed on the market, the government may order the manufacturer or related parties to take corrective measures such as recalling the products. Items subject to these regulations are required to self-certify conformity to technical standards, and those deemed particularly hazardous or likely to cause malfunctions are classified as specified electrical appliances, requiring inspection by a third-party organization.
Unifive's Initiatives
The AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount handled by our company are designated as DC power supplies, a category of specified electrical appliances, and we provide products that comply with the technical standards stipulated by PSE.
This time, we would like to introduce and explain the published information from the website of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as of July 25, 2017, regarding the treatment of "extension cord sets with appliance plug" and "extension cord sets incorporating AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount."
Even if electrical appliances appear similar, under PSE the "name of electrical appliance" differs depending on their application, and different technical standards apply. Wiring devices used to connect electricity from wall outlets to distant electrical appliances are generally called table taps or multi taps, but under PSE, they are classified as "extension cord sets."
Products in which an appliance plug is added to such multi taps are also treated as "extension cord sets" as a whole. However, if a multi tap is equipped with USB ports for charging smartphones, it is classified as a "DC power supply" and falls under the same category as the AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount that we provide.
Importers of electrical appliances from overseas are obligated under the PSE law to ensure that their products meet PSE’s technical standards, so care is required.
