About Original Designs

"I’d like to make the AC adapter an original design..."

We have received many requests from customers who would like an original AC adapter design for their product.

At Unifive, our products are made to order, and we handle each model as a semi-custom project, allowing us to meet such requests as much as possible. Of course, depending on the content, there may be certain conditions, but even so, in most cases, we are able to satisfy our customers, realizing a wide variety and large number of original designs.

However, depending on the purpose for which the customer’s device is used, the technical standards required for safety regulations will differ, and thus require a compatible AC adapter.

From Unifive’s design perspective, safety is of the utmost importance when it comes to AC adapters — even more so than price or appearance. Design comes as a secondary priority. We aim to realize both "safety first" from our design perspective and the "original design" requested by our customers. Challenges with original designs are not limited to the appearance of the product but, as noted above, may also introduce other risks. Therefore, we often work with customers through consultations and create custom power supplies to realize feasible original designs while addressing such risks.

Examples of Custom Original Designs

Case 1: Looking for an interior-inspired design

Company A emphasized that the design of their product was a top priority. To perfectly match their product image while complying with safety standards, they contacted us wanting to include the AC adapter in the design concept. We communicated the necessary distances and space required for internal circuit boards to meet safety standards. The customer then designed the exterior of the AC adapter, the casing, and the handle part of a custom DC plug to prevent misinsertion. Together, we collaborated on the product design.

In this case, the customer covered costs related to mold production for the casing and the handle of the DC plug, safety evaluation expenses for certification, and design and development fees. Still, they were very satisfied with the result — a truly unique AC adapter that exists nowhere else and could be sold bundled with their product.

Case 2: Wanting color variations for the AC adapter

A customer in the home appliance industry wanted to match the appearance of their white devices by changing the casing and DC cord of the Unifive AC adapter under consideration to white. They also requested a gray variant. By adjusting the colorants mixed with the resin material used in the casing, we maintained the flame-retardant grade of the enclosure. Similarly, the DC cord retained its flame retardance while allowing for color variation, ultimately enabling two color options.

Case 3: Wanting to change the product packaging (individual retail packaging) to an original design

In electronics retail stores, many 12V and 24V portable AC adapters for charging purposes are sold by various companies. A customer selling such charging AC adapters consulted with us, explaining that, in order to sell in stores, they needed to differentiate the individual packaging design. (Blister packs and backing cards are crucial for sales in the charger market.)

The customer handled the design for the blister and pack (the individual plastic box and its internal backing card), while we created the plastic mold for the case and mounted the backing card to match the design.

As a result, the customer was able to release their product on the market with their desired design and expressed great satisfaction.
