capacitor

A capacitor consists of two opposing parallel electrodes separated by a dielectric material. It is one of the basic and important components used in switching circuits. Due to its property of temporarily storing electricity, it plays a crucial role in smoothing circuits that convert AC to DC. It also functions as a filter because it passes only the AC component while blocking the DC component. In alternating current electrical circuits, it generates a leading power factor, making it useful as a power factor correction capacitor for power factor improvement.
