Opening and closing surge

In an AC electric circuit, this phenomenon refers to a momentary abnormal voltage that exceeds the rated voltage when a circuit breaker or similar device is switched on or off. Although switching is done at the zero point of the voltage, the phenomenon occurs because the current is not zero in cases of leading or lagging power factor. Switching surges increase with the load current and may negatively affect the power supply circuit on the load side as noise.
