Input/output isolation

In power supply circuits and similar systems, this refers to the electrical isolation between the input side and the output side of a circuit. The most common method of isolation is the use of a transformer, but other methods such as using a photocoupler are also available. Input-output isolation is sometimes implemented to protect the load on the output side from high voltage in the event of a circuit failure, especially when high voltage is used on the input side.
