UL

A non-profit organization established in 1894 by an association of U.S. fire insurance companies. Initially, its main purpose was for fire insurance companies to establish safety standards for electrical appliances and products, in order to protect consumers from fires caused by these products and to keep insurance premiums low. However, its scope later expanded, and it now covers not only industrial equipment including electrical machinery but also automotive parts. In 2012, it transitioned from a non-profit to a for-profit organization, and is working to maintain safety through product follow-up services. UL standards are also widely adopted in electrical and electronic equipment.
