AC/DC Power AdapterWe introduce safe handling methods for AC adapters. In the 8th installment, we feature "Do Not Leave It Plugged In." We explain the risks of leaving your AC/DC Power Adapter plugged in and the correct way to use it, along with countermeasures.

AC/DC Power Adapter, Do Not Leave It Plugged In

Among the items our customers send us for inspection, some are extremely dirty, and in certain cases we can imagine the usage environment of the Products based on the type of dirt. For example, if there are small scratches or paint marks in places, it was likely used at a worksite such as a factory. Or, as mentioned previously in "Do Not Get It Wet", if small animal hair is attached, it may have been placed in the corner of a room or near a pet's bed... It is unavoidable that surfaces become dirty after long-term use, so we are not particularly concerned about such signs of use. However, there is one specific area of dirt that requires careful attention. That is the space between the AC plug blades.

This is sometimes featured on TV news programs, but if dirt between the AC plug blades is left unattended while the plug remains inserted, a phenomenon called "tracking" may occur. "Tracking" refers to the buildup of dust and moisture between AC plug blades that are left plugged into an outlet, which then carbonizes and allows electric current to flow, potentially leading to ignition. We explained this in detail in Adapter News No.14, "AC/DC Power Adapter Tracking Countermeasures."

To prevent fires caused by "tracking" between the AC plug blades of power plugs, the Tokyo Fire Department recommends the following measures.

1. Do not leave the power plug (AC plug blades) inserted at all times; unplug it when not in use

2. Periodically inspect plugs that have been left inserted for a long time, clean them with a dry cloth, and replace them if there are abnormalities such as heat generation

3. Pay close attention to items used in dusty or humid environments or those hidden behind furniture

"I would like to see a phoenix, but..."

Once a fire starts, it is too late! We kindly ask our customers to periodically unplug any AC/DC Power Adapter that are left inserted in outlets and check whether dust has accumulated between the AC plug blades, so that they may be used safely for a long time.
