AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount, Do Not Leave Plugged In
Some of the items sent by customers for inspection are noticeably dirty, and from the nature of the dirt, one can sometimes imagine the environment where the product was used. For example, if there are small scratches or traces of paint in various spots, it can be assumed that the item was used in an industrial setting such as a factory. If there is fur from small animals, as mentioned in the previous article "Do Not Get Wet", it might have been placed near the edge of a room or close to a pet's bed. Dirt accumulated from long-term use is inevitable and is usually not a major concern. However, there is one point even with dirt that we would like you to pay attention to: the space between the AC blades (plugs).
Occasionally covered on TV news programs, the accumulation of dirt between the AC blades can give rise to a phenomenon called "tracking" if left unchecked. “Tracking” refers to the process where dust and moisture accumulate between the continuously plugged-in AC blades, eventually carbonize, conduct electricity, and lead to ignition. Details are explained in Adapter NEWS Vol. 14: “Tracking Countermeasures for AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount.”
To prevent fires caused by the tracking phenomenon between the blades of power plugs, the Tokyo Fire Department recommends the following:
1. Do not leave the power plug (AC blades) plugged in continuously; unplug it when not in use
2. Periodically inspect and wipe down plugs that are kept plugged in for long periods using a dry cloth. Replace immediately if abnormal heating or other issues are found
3. Be especially cautious with plugs used in dusty or humid environments, or those hidden behind furniture

“Would love to see a firebird instead...”
It’s too late once a fire has started! We kindly ask our customers to periodically unplug their AC/DC Power Adapters — Desktop & Wall-Mount, check for any dust between the AC blades, and ensure safe, long-term use.
